In this role you’ll be working alongside local surveyors and school teachers, collecting data on tourism trends, climate change effects, and community health. For example, you might spend a morning filling out a field‑survey form for 20 tourist families staying at a homestay, then later use Excel and simple Python scripts to clean the data and generate a report that our clients read.

Day‑to‑day duties include:
- Conducting on‑site surveys and interviews with locals and tourists
- Enter and verify data in a shared Google Sheet and perform basic statistical analysis with SPSS or Python
- Prepare weekly progress reports using PowerPoint and send them to partners in Delhi
- Assist senior researchers in drafting manuscripts for regional journals
- Maintain field equipment (tablets, digital audio recorders, GPS units) and report any malfunctions to our tech team
Tools and equipment: We use a mix of modern and rugged gear – Dell laptops with Wi‑Fi routers set up in the office, a small portable GPS unit, a handheld recorder, and a stable internet connection that’s been patched up each year. Excel, Python, and basic GIS software are your daily companions.
Working environment: Our office is a two‑story building in the old market area, with a balcony that overlooks the ancient Leh bazaar. Inside, we have a cramped but functional lab space with a 24‑hour power backup (thanks to a diesel generator), a small kitchenette, and a relaxed lounge where we unwind after a day’s hard work.
